Kolkata: Flyover - ready to beat heat of travel

May 2010:

The reconstruction aspect of Kolkata is arguably more prominent these days than before. It is being a top priority item in The Kolkata Government's development programme. City is laden with projects like a modern Kolkata airport for Rs. 2,500 crore, a new east-west line for Rs. 5,000 crore and a mammoth flyover between Park Circus and EM Bypass for Rs. 320 crore. The city will certainly witness these developments in next four years.

These projects have already kicked-off and set to transform commuters' lives. Both the east-west Metro and the flyover are projects funded under the 'Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission'. Completion of flyover will bring great benefits. Travel time on the 10-km stretch from Paroma Island to Rabindra Sadan will be reduced by 30-40 minutes and people will gain a massive relief from congestion at the Park Circus seven-point crossing, Darga Road intersection, Tiljala and Topsia crossing and as well as intersection with Gobinda Khatik Road.

Ground works like soil exploration and topographical survey have been completed. To make this flyover user friendly, there are multiple entry and exit points. Underpasses have been built to avoid traffic prone zone. This project is supposed to be completed ahead of the scheduled. There are, however, several challenges ahead- the biggest being traffic management near Salt Lake, Lake Town, Baguiati,Garia and Ruby Island.

Shifting underground utilities is another big task. As the cantilever piers for the west and east ramp along the Park Street-Darga Road crossing, Park Circus seven-point crossing, Circus Avenue, Congress Exhibition Road and Nasiruddin Road will be located on the footpath, all major domestic utilities like electrical, telephone, water and sewer outlets, have to be shifted with channel zed manner.
